JAY — The annual Special Olympics Summer Games take place from 9:45 a.m. until 1 p.m. Thursday, May 2, at Spruce Mountain High School.

Co-chairman Gary Desjardins said more than 200 developmentally disabled children and adults from throughout Western Maine are expected to participate.

The event is sponsored by the Franklin County Special Olympics Committee, of which Desjardins and Gerry Toothaker are co-chairmen, and the Jay AMVETS Post 33. The two organizations also sponsored this year’s Special Olympics Winter Games, which took place at Sugarloaf.

Volunteers from the Jay AMVETS Post will be assisted by several gifted and talented students from the high school, as well as by students from the University of Maine at Farmington. The AMVETS post will also serve lunch to all participants.

Among the events are track and field and softball throws. For adults and chidlren who are in wheelchairs, more than two dozen events have been organized, said Desjardins.

The public is welcome to attend.
