Spring Fling dinner at Legion

AUBURN — American Legion Post 31 will host a Spring Fling dinner from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Friday, May 3, at the post home, 426 Washington St.

A complete ham dinner with homemade dessert is $7 per person.

Gardening program, potluck

DURHAM — A potluck and presentation on gardening in community will be held Saturday, May 4, at 534 Quaker Meeting House Road. The potluck will be at 5:30 p.m.

The presentation at 6:45 will be given by Laura and Eric Evans of Camden. Laura is a former MOFGA board member and Eric is a retired compost consultant.

There will be a tour of the Durham Friends Meeting’s communal garden, a discussion and American Chestnut seedlings will be available.

Dillingham DAR to meet May 8

LEWISTON — Mary Dillingham Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, will host the new State Regent elect at their next meeting, a tea at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, at the home of Lois Gilbert, 60 Genest St.

Sandra Swallow of Harpswell will be inaugurated at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. in June, and Mary Dillingham will be the first chapter to honor her election. Everyone is encouraged to bring something to pass, “tea” sandwiches, cookies, etc.

All women over the age of 18 who can prove a direct blood line to an American Patriot, or someone who gave aid to the cause of Independence is welcome to join; genealogists are available to help you establish your line.

Sodalist of the Year dinner

LEWISTON — The Ladies of St. Ann Sodality of Holy Family, Prince of Peace Parish, will have their annual celebration of the Sodalist of the Year Award on Wednesday, May 8, at the Green Ladle Cafe on East Avenue.

A baked stuffed chicken dinner will be served. Doors will open at 5:30 and dinner will be at 6 p.m. Tickets are $15 and have to be purchased prior to the event. For tickets contact any board member or call Anita at 782-4516.

The entertainment will be by Lola Lee and the Country Bandits. There will be door prizes and 50/50.

Artist Joel Babb to visit library

AUBURN — Renowned Maine artist Joel Babb, who has masterfully portrayed the complexities of painting both the urban landscape and the Maine wilderness, will be the Auburn Public Library at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 9, to share his art and inspiration

Recently the subject of a book written by art critic Carl Little and titled “Nature and Culture: The Art of Joel Babb,” critics have said that “Babb’s finely detailed depictions of Boston, particularly those of the Back Bay extending from the Charles River to the John Hancock building, do for that city what Canaletto did for Venice.” Portraying his New England ties, Babb has also completed other paintings of New England landscapes.

Babb will talk about his work and his inspiration. The free program will take place in the Androscoggin Community Room.

Civil War Round Table Lecture

BRUNSWICK — A Joshua L. Chamberlain Civil War Round Table Lecture will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 9, at Curtis Memorial Library Morrell Room, 23 Pleasant St.

Mark Dunkelman will speak on “Marching with Sherman: Through Georgia and the Carolinas with 154th New York.”
