NEW SHARON — A safe believed to have been stolen was recovered in an outlet of Crowell Pond on May 3 with its bottom smashed open, Trooper Mathew Casavant of the Maine State Police said.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Department received a call from a fisherman earlier this spring notifying them that a safe was found in the stream leading out of the pond on Route 41, he said Friday.

Casavant, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and the Maine State Police Underwater Recovery Unit recovered the safe. The safe was obviously stolen due to its condition, but no one has claimed it, Casavant said.

The safe is a tan color, is 18 to 24 inches wide and about that same height, and 15 to 20 inches deep, he said.

There are no markings of the brand or type of safe. It is unknown where the safe may have come from, he said.
