LIVERMORE — Brush and large amounts of asphalt shingles will not be accepted at the town’s Transfer Station.
The Solid Waste Board agreed not to pursue adding a separate asphalt shingle container at this time, assistant administrator Kurt Schaub said.
The town updated its station last year and started accepting bulky waste in early January after its contract with Jay expired Dec. 31.
“In each of the past two years, our residents delivered to the Jay Transfer Station only about six tons of roofing shingles, typically in small quantities,” he said. “It doesn’t make sense financially to install the container and pad and pay for transportation unless we’re going to collect 15 to 20 tons, which is the average load.”
Most people doing an entire house will arrange for a container and disposal on their own, he said.
Small quantities of asphalt shingles, up to 1,200 square feet, can be disposed of in the town’s bulky waste dumpsters at a cost of 5 cents per pound, and larger quantities can be delivered to the Mid-Maine Waste Action Corp. facility in Auburn.
Brush is another item not being considered at this time because residents were taking only about 10 to 15 pickup truck loads to Jay each year, Schaub said.
If there is enough volume, there are vendors willing to chip it and haul it for free, he said.
The Maine Department of Environmental Protection doesn’t permit the stockpiling of brush from one year to the next.
Without the volume, it hardly seems worth the effort and potential cost for the town, he said.
“Burning it is an alternative but that would require calling in the Fire Department to stand by,” Schaub said.
