Dance benefits Relay For Life

PARIS — Team Izzy and Team Rowe Tigers will hold A Starry Night Benefit Dance from 8 p.m. to midnight, Saturday, May 18, at the Four Seasons Function Center. The event, featuring Dj Bump, will benefit Relay For Life.

Indoor yard sale at Wilkins House

WATERFORD — An indoor yard sale will be held from 8 a.m. to midnight Saturday, May 18, at the Wilkins House on Plummer Hill Road, next to the church.

There will be many new items including a small rocker with needlepoint seat, rug hooking frame and holder for braiding rugs. All proceeds benefit the church and the Wilkins House.

VFW plans breakfast May 19

HARRISON — The Ronald St. John VFW Post, 176 Waterford Road, will hold its popular breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. Sunday, May 19, at the post.

The breakfast features scrambled eggs, French toast, pancakes, biscuits and gravy, bacon, sausage, home fries, fruit cups, sweet breads, orange juice and beverage. The cost will be $6 per person for adults and $3 for children 10 and under.

Work days at fairgrounds

WATERFORD — Ron Hill, superintendent of the Waterford World’s Fair grounds, is planning work days on Sunday, May 19, and Sunday, June 2, starting at 10 a.m.

There is the usual painting and light carpentry repairs that need to be taken care of as well as mowing and trimming of the grounds, sweeping out of all the building and getting everything ready for summer events.

Lunch will be provided for those who lend a hand.

There are still several weekends available for rent. Anyone interested in renting the grounds should call Bob Dixon at 743-9246.

Finnish-American Society meeting

WEST PARIS — The Finnish-American Heritage Society of Maine will host Yvonne Lockwood, Finlandia Foundations’ Lecturer of the Year, at their monthly meeting at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 19, at the Heritage Center, 8 Maple St.

Lockwood will present a program on “Material Culture and Traditions in Finnish America” using illustrations from her own study of rag rugs, looms, foods, woodworking and more.

Lockwood was born and raised in the densely Finnish-populated Upper Peninsula of Michigan before moving to California where she went to high school and college.

Returning to Michigan she has researched and written on various aspects of Finnish America. Her book, “Finnish American Rag Rugs: Art, Tradition, and Ethnic Continuity,” is the result of 20 years of research.

The program is open to the public.

‘Buy a Bundle’ fundraiser

NORWAY — Friends of the Gingerbread House will launch its new “Buy a Bundle” campaign from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 25, at the historic Gingerbread House, Main Street. The public is invited to the site for coffee and donuts.

Donations of $50 will be accepted to purchase a bundle of shingles for the upcoming roof repair.

“Buy a Bundle” will continue at various times through the summer months with the goal of the roof repair being completed by the fall.

Pot roast supper May 25 at Masons

BRYANT POND — A public pot roast supper will take place from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 25, at the Masonic Building, Main Street, Route 26.

The supper includes mashed potatoes with gravy, carrots, rolls, homemade pies, bread pudding, coffee, tea, punch and water.

Diabetic desserts and beverages will be available. Cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under. Take-outs will be available.
