PERU — Police charged a Peru man this week with selling cocaine, after they searched his home and also found other illegal drugs, firearms and about $4,400 in cash.

John Gallant, 19, of 6 Stage Coach Road was arrested Monday evening as part of a “large-scale drug distribution operation,” the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency said in a news release.

“We’ve seized drug ledgers,” MDEA Sgt. Matt Cashman said. “We fully expect additional arrests, as well as further charges against Mr. Gallant.”

According to the MDEA, its agents, along with the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office and Maine State Police, executed a search warrant at Gallant’s home and found cocaine, Oxycodone, psychedelic mushrooms, marijuana, multiple firearms, ledgers from drug sales and about $4,400 in cash. The drugs had an estimated street value of more than $10,000 and many of them were packaged for distribution, the agency statement said.

Gallant was charged with one count of unlawful trafficking in scheduled drugs, namely cocaine.

Cashman credited the arrest to cooperation between the MDEA and the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, which recently made Cpl. Chancy Libby a resident MDEA agent. “He was a big part of this,” Cashman said.

Gallant was released from the Oxford County Jail in Paris late Monday night on $10,000 surety bail. His arraignment is set for Aug. 16.
