FARMINGTON — The Franklin County Sheriff’s Department reminds drivers that the months of May and June are notorious for high rates of motor vehicle collisions with deer and moose.
In just the past week, the department has responded to five motor vehicle crashes involving deer and two involving moose.
The car-deer crashes occurred in Avon, Kingfield, Phillips and Strong. The car-moose crashes occurred in Rangeley Plantation and Adams Township.
No serious injuries were reported.
In most of the crashes, the deer were killed in the crash, Lt. David Rackliffe said. One moose ran off after the collision, and the condition of the other moose was not known.
The vehicles were extensively damaged in most of these crashes and were towed from the scene, he said.
Wildlife crashes are more prevalent in the early morning and early evening.
The Sheriff’s Department encourages drivers to pay attention to the roadway, ensure they are driving within the speed limit and avoid being distracted while driving.
