RANGELEY — Thirty voters from RSU 78 unanimously approved a $3.42 million school budget for 2013-14 Tuesday night.

Superintendent Brian Foster and 10 members of the School Board were among those attending the meeting.

Rangeley Town Clerk Ethna Thompson swore in Kit Caspar as moderator. He called for a motion to allow Foster, who is not a resident of the region, to speak.

After audience member Rob Welch questioned several details on the first few warrant articles, School Board member Chris Farmer suggested Foster preface discussion of each article with a brief clarification of it, which voters agreed to.

Article 13 required a written yes/no ballot instead of a show of hands to recommend additional local funds of $1,352,280.80, which was higher than the state’s Essential Programs and Services funding model of $1,273,239.16.

“What the state says is enough to educate children is not enough, so we raise more,” Caspar said. The vote was 36-6 to raise the additional money.

A validation referendum on the $3,420,930.65 spending plan will be held Tuesday, June 11.

RSU 78 includes Dallas Plantation, Magalloway Plantation, Rangeley, Rangeley Plantation and Sandy River Plantation.
