Dance at Wilson Grange

WILTON — A dance will be held from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, June 22, at the Wilson Grange hall across from Shelly’s Hometown Market.

Dancing music mix for all ages, including big band, ’50s, ’60s and ’70s music.

Non-alcoholic refreshments will be available. Admission is $8. at the door.

Cary Library book sale, gala

WAYNE — Cary Library book sale and gala will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 28, at the Williams House, across from the library, at 14 Old Winthrop Road.

The book sale features gently used books at great prices. Enjoy a complimentary glass of wine, elegant hors d’oeuvres and home made desserts. A limited number of tickets are available at the library. Cost is $10 in advance, $12 on the day of the event.

The book sale continues, with no admission charge, at the Williams House on Saturday, June 29, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and throughout the week: from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday and Friday, from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.

Society to honor selectmen

STRATTON — On Saturday, June 29, The Dead River Area Historical Society will honor “Joe and John Caldwell– Selectman” hosted by Joe’s daughter Kim Caldwell.

The Caldwell brothers have served this community well. Joe was a lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge in Stratton. Formerly the plant manager at Forster Manufacturing, he retired in 1985 after a varied career, which included 25 years at the mill, several years selling life insurance and nine years running his own store with his wife, Celestine.

He was also involved with his community and served as school board director, excise tax collector, planning board member and town selectman for three years.

John also has had a varied career which included, woodsman/logger owning his own skidder, many years as a janitor/bus driver for SAD 58 in Stratton, was with the Stratton/Eustis Youth Program in 1958 when it began. He was president from 1963 to 1979, has been selectman for 22 years and has been instrumental to the many changes to the community.

John worked on getting the acreage for the Transfer Station and setting that up. Among his many accomplishments for the town John worked on what is now called John’s Road on the Ridge making it so snowmobiles and four-wheelers could go through to the public lot which he instrumented in getting in a trade with IP.

People for Peace breakfast

WINTHROP — Winthrop-Wayne People for Peace will hold a public strawberry breakfast from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, June 29, at the Winthrop Center Friends Church, 219 Winthrop Center Road, Route 135.

Event will include planning for the Winthrop Peace Pole and community projects including support for the Winthrop Food Pantry, honoring Tom Sturtevant’s vision for peace.

Cribbage, supper benefits Relay

DIXFIELD — Relay For Life cribbage and supper will be held Sunday, June 30, at Mystic Valley Grange, 932 U.S. Route 2 West, in East Dixfield.

The public is invited to play cribbage at 1 p.m. Donation is $5 to support Relay For Life.

A meal of spaghetti and meatball, tossed salad, garlic bread, dessert and drinks will be served. Donation of $5 supports the Grange.

Beedy family plans reunion

WILTON — The descendants of Aaron and Vailette (Dunham) Beedy will celebrate their 66th reunion Sunday, June 30, at Kineowatha Park.

The reunion starts at 10 a.m. with a meeting at 10:30 followed by a potluck lunch at noon.

Social activities and the Great Beedy Auction will be in the afternoon (only two items per family).

Last year Aaron Beedy’s father’s name, Henri Bedee Des Aulnais 1676, and his grandfather’s name, Jaques De Bedee Des Aulnais Sieur De Reilly 1652, was presented. Verification and/or further information would be appreciated.

Surnames of other Beedy descendants are Badger, Barden, Corson, Haines, Knapp, Meldrum, Nadeau, Rowe, Stinchfield, Tidswell, Twitchell and Vaughn.
