CARRABASSETT VALLEY — The third annual Carrabassett Backcountry Cycle Challenge will be held Friday to Sunday, July 12-14, at the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center.
A spaghetti dinner and autograph session with Tinker Juarez will take place Friday night.
Competitive events will include a 100K and a 50K race on Saturday.
Sunday’s events include a kids’ fun race and guided rides for the entire family.
Juarez, a mountain bike legend, will compete in the 100K race. He has won races in BMX, mountain bike racing and endurance road racing. He represented the USA in the 1996 and 2000 Olympics; he is a three-time U.S. Cross-Country National Champion and a four-time U.S. 24-Hour National Champion.
He is also a Pan Am Games Gold Medalist, a Cross-Country World Championship silver Medalist, a 24-Hour World Solo Championship Gold Medalist and won the Master World Champion title in 2010 at age 49.
On the road, he has won the Heart of the South 500-mile race and placed third in the 2006 Race Across American, finishing that 3,050-mile race in just 10 days. In 2012, Tinker was second in the 2011 Mount Washington, N.H., bike race completing the 7.6-mile ascent race in 56 minutes, 22 seconds.
