NEW SHARON — A Franklin County justice on Monday afternoon lowered the bail for a Canadian man involved in a motor vehicle crash that injured a New Sharon teenager.
Justice Kevin Cuddy ordered Adam King, 19, of Newfoundland, to be held on $1,000 cash bail with conditions that include no alcohol, or in the alternative a pretrial service agreement. He was initially held on $50,000 cash bail after he was arrested by a Franklin County Sheriff’s deputy.
King lost control of a truck about 12:30 a.m. Monday on the Weeks Mills Road in New Sharon, and the truck ended up in a ditch, Franklin County Lt. David Rackliffe said. A 15-year-old boy riding with King was seriously injured, Rackliffe said.
The accident is under investigation.
The New Sharon boy is listed in stable condition at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Rackliffe said. He was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington by a NorthStar EMS ambulance and transferred to the Portland hospital.
King received minor injuries and was treated at the scene by ambulance personnel, but he declined to be taken to a hospital, Rackliffe said.
Deputy Nicholas Zecher arrested King on a felony charge of operating under the influence causing serious injury, he said. He was taken to Franklin County jail in Farmington.
When King appeared in Franklin County Superior Court later in the day, the charges were a felony count of aggravated OUI and a misdemeanor charge of operating beyond license conditions or restrictions. He entered no plea.
Assistant District Attorney Joshua Robbins said the latter count is in reference to there being zero tolerance of alcohol because he is younger than 21. That is the legal age to drink in Maine.
Robbins also told the court that King is in the United States on a 10-year visa from Canada. This case would likely have an affect on his visa, he said.
Cuddy told King that immigration ramifications of the charges may be significant. He advised him to make sure when a lawyer is appointed that it be reviewed.
Zecher responded to the early morning accident and found King and the teenager outside of a 1992 GMC pickup. After the crash, the owner of the truck, Jeffrey Thomas of Harmony, reported it stolen, Rackliffe said.
Deputy Nate Reid assisted Zecher at the scene. New Sharon Fire Rescue Department members also responded to assist.
County detectives Steve Charles and Ken Charles, and Deputy Matt Brann were reconstructing the accident Monday morning, St. Laurent said.
