LEEDS — The Rural Community Action Ministry held an open house on May 18, showcasing the recently completed renovations to the new senior residence facility next door to the RCAM offices at 87 Church Hill Road.
A project several years in the making, the new residence will offer three single-room and one double-room rental units for low income area residents 55 or older who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Applications are now being accepted for prospective residents who must qualify for the Section 8 rental assistance program.
Members of the RCAM staff and board of directors were on hand to give tours. A steady stream of visitors took advantage of the opportunity to tour the facility, which is fully furnished, thanks to generous community members.
“You’d never guess the furniture was donated by all different people. The staff has done a wonderful job arranging everything, and it looks like it was made to go together,” said board chair Kristin White.
Each room has a colorful quilt made and donated by the Leeds Community Church Women’s Association. There is a common living room and kitchen, and each unit has its own bathroom and will be equipped with a small refrigerator, a microwave and a TV. Open house guests were enthusiastic about the deck off each of the rooms overlooking the spacious backyard and numerous gardens.
People can still call the RCAM office during office hours to arrange a tour, or, if the sign is out by the residence, stop in the office, and someone will show you around. For more information or an application, call the RCAM office at 524-5095.
