WELD — Representatives of the Maine Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting Tuesday on proposed work to two bridges on Route 142.

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. in the multipurpose room at the Weld Town Office.

Bowley Brook Bridge on Route 142 and Houghton Brook Bridge on Route 142 are in need of substantial rehabilitation, Project Manager Steve Bodge said Wednesday.

The streambed is slowly eroding under the abutments of the bridges, he said.

The meeting is to gather information on floods, get community input and to explain the proposed plan to address the erosion, Bodge said.

In this type of project, much of the work is down at the streambed, he said. It is not expected to have any major effect on traffic or involve road closures.

The combined cost of rehabilitating both bridges is estimated at $300,000, he said.

The plan would be to advertise this fall for the bridge projects, with the intent to start work in the summer of 2014. The projects will go out to bid, he said.
