Because of a last-minute change in location, last night’s Auburn teenage record hop was a “flop.” Auburn Parks and Recreation Supt. Harry E. Reynolds reported that only 180 people showed up at Edward Little High School. He said the outdoor dance failed because “with the location changed late Tuesday, the word didn’t get all the way out.” The Wednesday night dance is normally held at the Food Town parking lot on Spring Street. An estimated 35,000 additional fans flowed into the town of Oxford on Sunday to join the 100,000 already there for the final weekend performance of the Grateful Dead at Oxford Plains Speedway. The multi-colored mass of humanity, distinguishable in the this manufacturing town of 4,500 by their tie-dyed clothes, roamed and camped on the race track grounds off Route 26 and overflowed into fields, lawns, business parking lots and beside town roads miles away. The infield area of the on-third-mile track was jammed from the stage at the north end to the concession stands ringing the south. Thousands watched from the main grandstand, where 13,000 seats were available.
