LEWISTON — The top floor of the Lewiston Public Library will resound with the singing of strings and the patter of feet at 6:30 p.m. Friday, July 12, when musicians from age 11 to “ageless” gather to play for an evening of old-time New England dancing in Callahan Hall.
The action will kick off with a family barn dance featuring music provided by a recently founded multi-generational folk orchestra in its public debut. The group will perform a lively mix of jigs and reels under the direction of Doug Protsik, a veteran multi-instrumentalist from Woolwich best known for his prowess on fiddle, piano and accordion. The ensemble numbers about a dozen other folk musicians from the Twin Cities and beyond who among them play fiddle, cello, guitar, mandolin, piano, accordion, bodhran and spoons.
Leading an assortment of fun and easy square, circle and contra dances will be Cindy Larock of Lewiston, who said that the event is designed for “anyone old enough to know their left from their right,” making it user-friendly for school-age youth as well as their parents and grandparents. Aside from the wholesome, chem-free social benefits, the dancing also provides a good aerobic workout. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for youth, including students up through age 22.
Beginning at 8 p.m. will be two hours of contra and couple dancing to music by master fiddler Frank Ferrel of Brunswick backed up by Protsik on piano. Taking over the reins as caller for this portion of the evening will be Maggie Robinson of Yarmouth, who invites all to attend, with or without a partner.
“No prior dance experience is necessary,” she said, “just a sense of fun and a pair of comfortable shoes.” Admission is $5, $2 for students up to age 22.
Net proceeds from the event will be donated to the continued support of the folk orchestra. Those who prefer to just sit out and listen to the music are also welcome to attend.
