In an effort to make sense of abstract artwork the viewer often looks to the name for guidance. And when a name doesn’t give insight, the viewer must contemplate subjective associations, feelings and reactions to the work. With the show “What’s in a Name?” the artists encourage viewers to interact with the artwork and express their reactions to the work by providing each piece with a name of their choosing.
How the artist names an abstract piece of art often gives insight into the artist’s process. Has the artist created the piece based on their feelings or have they started with an intellectual concept or even an object or scene that is a jumping off point for their abstraction?
Coelho’s works are expressions of her feelings. She described the process this way: “The days I am happy not only with what I am doing, but having the most fun are the days when the paint just flows from the hand, I am not really thinking much, I am just placing what ‘feels right’.”
For Mascher, she may be working from feelings or from an intellectual concept such as her recent series of collage works called “Vanities.”
