“We Did It! Working Women of Vienna and Mount Vernon 1900s to 1950s” pays tribute the many facets of “women’s work” in small town Maine. Working women, a redundant phrase, ran the gamut of types of work, and the historical society tries to cover that range of teachers, telephone operators, writers, dressmakers, clerks, innkeepers, musicians, and more. Recognizing that many women did not work full-time jobs outside the home, but that they nevertheless supplemented the family income through other means, as well as contributed to the good of the community, farm women are included in the display.
“Women at Work” will run from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. every Saturday from July 13 through the end of October at the historical society building on Highway 41 in Vienna Village. Over a hundred women are represented in this presentation with a photo and description of their work. There is no charge and everyone is invited to see the plethora of work undertaken by our grandmothers, mothers, sisters and aunts.
