LEWISTON — Police were still investigating what caused a dangerous head-on collision on outer Lisbon Street on Saturday afternoon.

The accident sent three people to Central Maine Medical Center in serious condition, Lewiston police Sgt. James Theiss said. He said he could not release the names of the two women and one man who were injured.

The accident occurred at 4:29 p.m. at about 1567 Lisbon St. A blue 1998 Volvo carrying the man collided head-on with a 2004 Chrysler Concord carrying the two women. Theiss said he did not know which car was going in which direction. Accident investigators were still on the scene Saturday night trying to determine the cause.

“We know that everyone is in pretty rough shape,” he said. “But other than that, we are waiting to see the extents of their injuries and the outcome of the investigation. We’re not sure of charges or anything yet. We’re talking to witnesses and piecing everything together.”

The accident closed Lisbon Street for several hours. Police opened the inbound lanes, but routed drivers headed out to Lisbon through the Tractor Supply Store parking lot for several hours Saturday night.
