PORTLAND — Portland Public Schools officials are disputing a claim by Republican Gov. Paul LePage that the city’s high schools limit uniformed military recruiters’ access to students.
Officials said Monday that the district’s four high schools allow uniformed military recruiters to speak with students. Portland High School Principal Deborah Migneault says in a statement that military recruiters have a table set up outside the guidance office.
In a Friday radio address, LePage said Portland high schools were among several brought to the administration’s attention that only allow recruiters minimal access. LePage criticized Democrats for rejecting legislation to ensure uniformed military recruiters have the same access to the state’s public schools as other college and career recruiters.
Democrats who voted against the bill say there is no factual evidence that it’s a problem.
