AUGUSTA (AP) — A former hazardous materials cleanup specialist for the state has been cleared of a charge of tampering with public records.
Jon Andrews of Augusta successfully completed terms of a five-month deferred disposition, which included making a $3,500 donation to the Maine Coastal & Inland Surface Oil Cleanup fund.
His lawyer said the 58-year-old Andrews, who retired in March 2012 from the state Department of Environmental Protection, destroyed his notes as he was cleaning out his desk and didn’t think it was wrong.
The Kennebec Journal (http://bit.ly/1aKV7CV ) reported that Andrews entered an Alford plea in February, meaning he believed there was enough evidence to convict.
Prosecutors said Andrews destroyed or tampered with 265 reports the day he retired as “a parting shot at the department he had had a difficult relationship with.”
