PERU — Further discussion about a request for a junkyard permit for the former Diamond Match mill will be held when the renewal comes up in October, selectmen Chairman Jim Pulsifer said Monday night.
Margaret and Roy Howes told the board last month that they want a junkyard permit before purchasing the mill along the Androscoggin River. The board approved a one-year permit in 2012.
Former Selectman Dickie Powell said Monday that it should never have been approved because the property is in the floodplain and shoreland zoning.
Resident Larry Porter also spoke against renewing the permit.
Pulsifer told the board the permit wouldn’t be up for renewal until October and they would hold off discussion until then.
Powell and Pulsifer disagreed on who should issue the permit, if at all. Powell said the Planning Board had no authority, but Pulsifer said the property was zoned as shoreland, giving the Planning Board authority in the matter.
In other business, Pulsifer read from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection newsletter, referring to changes to shoreland zoning. One change is that municipalities are not required to submit a biennial report on all activities in the shoreland zone.
Pulsifer also read an announcement inviting the board to the Med-Care Ambulance Open House on July 18 starting at 9 a.m. The new station is at 290 Highland Terrace in Mexico.
The board also approved the following:
* A storage shed for Dennis Thibodeau at 31 Holman Road.
* Removal of a small porch and a deck addition for Richard Dolloff at Auburn Road.
* A swimming pool for David and Joanne Woods at 535 Greenwoods Road.
Selectman Danny Wing said he wanted to go to the Maine Property Tax School and Pulsifer approved.
Dennis Thibodeau told the board he was not starting a campground at his home, but had offered to store a few campers for a short while. He said most of them are gone now.
He also questioned the assessment of Snowshoe and Honey Run campgrounds.
Pulsifer said he would check out the campgrounds.
