LEWISTON — Join members of the Stanton Bird Club for a leisurely paddle on Hooper Pond in Greene on Sunday, July 28. The 25-acre pond, also known as Little Sabattus Pond, is an undeveloped pond with easy public access.
The State of Maine has identified Hooper Pond as having exemplary pond and stream shore vegetation, and high-value breeding habitat for many species of wading birds and waterfowl that are in decline within the Northeast, including the wood duck, black duck and American bittern.
Participants will enjoy an easy paddle on quiet waters in search of a rich variety of birds, wildflowers, dragonflies and other natural wonders.
The group will meet at the Promenade Mall parking lot in front of Staples, leaving at 8 a.m. and returning around 11 a.m. Participants should provide their own kayak or canoe, paddle and personal floatation device.
Stanton field trips are free and nonmembers are invited. All experience levels are welcome. For more information, contact trip leaders Alan Seamans at 240-1723 or Linda Seamans at 240-1380.
The Stanton Bird Club is a conservation organization offering monthly free natural history programs and field trips throughout the state. The organization welcomes new members whose dues help to provide land stewardship at three sanctuaries, owned and managed by the club, in Lewiston and Monmouth.
