RUMFORD — Maine Korean War Veterans from the River Valley area will be recognized from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 27 at American Legion Post No. 24.
Legion Commander Patricia Thurston will join veterans researcher Len Greaney of Rumford and Maine Sen. Jim Hamper, R-Oxford, in hosting the event on the first Maine Korean War Recognition Day.
“We hope to have numerous Korean War veterans attend the event,” Greaney said Wednesday in a news release. “We have received support from the Washington, D. C., committee.”
The event is part of the nationwide 60th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice, he said.
Greaney said they will display the names and service records for 1,031 River Valley-area Korean War veterans on 11 ‘mock-up’ memorial panels. The panels will be placed on Post No. 24’s lawn just outside the hall.
He said they have requested and received 1,031 Certificates of Service from the U.S. Department of Defense for the area’s Korean War veterans.
U. S. Rep. Michael Michaud, D-Maine, will be the guest speaker, while Peter Ogden, director of Maine Veterans Services, and Thurston will present Maine certificates and Defense Department certificates to recognize those veterans attending.
Additionally, U.S. and River Valley legislators and town managers have been invited to attend.
Greaney said they also hope to attract veterans from the River Valley who are not formally associated with a military organization. The event is also open to veteran’s friends and family members.
