BETHEL — Town Manager Jim Doar learned Wednesday that the U.S. Department of Transportation announced earlier in the day that Bethel Regional Airport was awarded a $750,000 grant.
Doar was contacted by Ed Gilman, U.S. Rep. Michael Michaud’s communications director in Washington, D.C. Gilman said the federal DOT notifies Congressional offices first, so representatives can relay the news to airport managers.
“Jim was pretty thrilled about it,” Gilman said. Doar manages the airport.
The grant will pay for constructing a terminal building, access road, parking lot and electrical vault.
Michaud, a longtime member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, praised the Federal Aviation Administration’s approval of nearly $5 million in funding for eight Maine airports.
“I’m pleased this funding has been approved,” Michaud said.
In addition to Bethel Regional Airport, others reciving grant money are Pittsfield Municipal Airport, Greenville Municipal Airport, Old Town Municipal Airport, Bangor International Airport, Northern Aroostook Regional Airport, Northern Maine Regional Airport and Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport.
“From airport terminals to runway enhancements, these projects represent a step forward not only for safety, but also our economy,” Michaud said. “Investments in our airport infrastructure help ensure Maine communities stay connected and competitive.”
