Monmouth history book now on sale

MONMOUTH — Recalling Monmouth’s Greatest Turf and Farm Era Vol. II is now available at the Monmouth Museum, 749 Main St.

This book is filled with several hundreds pages of stories and photos of interest to people all over Maine and New England. Contributors included Bobbie Bowler, Larry Buggia and Rudy Johnson, and others, who contributed stories, anecdotes and photos that enrich the local history.

The book is also available this week at the museum’s table at the Monmouth Fair, from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

The Monmouth Museum is open from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sundays through the summer.

VFW to host smoked turkey supper Saturday

AUBURN — A barbecue beef and smoked turkey public supper will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3, VFW Post #1603, 583 Minot Ave. Cost is $7 for adults; age 13 and under, $4.

Masons to host bean supper in Durham

DURHAM — A Masonic bean supper will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, at the Masonic Lodge, Route 136 across from the Durham River Park.

The menu includes baked beans, chop suey, hot dogs, potato salad, coleslaw, bread, pickles and homemade pies. Cost is $7.50 for adults; children 5 to 12, $3, children under 5 eat free.

Legion to host Bloody Mary breakfast

GRAY — The American Legion Auxiliary will host a Bloody Mary breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, at the Legion, 15 Lewiston Road. Cost is $5.50 without drinks; $7.50 for one drink; $9 for two drinks.

Free art workshop for cancer patients

LEWISTON — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing is offering a free art workshop for cancer patients, survivors and caregivers. The Restorative Power of Art will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 14, at the Dempsey Center, 29 Lowell St.

Visual art and other modes of creativity, such as movement, music and poetry will be explored as tools to promote hope, communication and emotional healing.

Breast cancer survivor, visual artist and retired clinical psychologist Sally Loughridge will share her book, Rad Art: A Journey through Radiation Treatment.

Alzheimer’s walk scheduled for September

LEWISTON — The Central Maine Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, at Simard-Payne Memorial Park. Nearly 300 people from the Lewiston/Auburn area are expected at this year’s event to raise awareness and funds to fight Alzheimer’s disease.

The event features a three-mile walk and  participants will learn about Alzheimer’s disease, advocacy opportunities, clinical trial enrollment, and support programs and services of the Alzheimer’s Association. Each walker will also join in the Promise Garden ceremony, a tribute to honor those affected by Alzheimer’s disease.
