Henry N. Paradis

1932 – 2013

SCARBOROUGH — Henry N. Paradis Jr., 81, of Rackleff Street, Portland, died
Saturday, Aug. 3, surrounded by family and friends at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.

He was born Jan. 22, 1932, in Lewiston, the son of Henry N. Paradis and Adrienne I. Janelle and brother of Joan Patricia Paradis. He graduated from St. Dominic High School, Hebron Academy and the University of Maine with a BA in sociology and was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity.

Henry joined the United States Army, serving in the Far East during the Korean War. A longtime resident of Lewiston, he was past member of the Lions Club, Musical Club, Literary Club, Knights of Columbus and Junior Chamber of Commerce. He served 18 years as a member of the Police Athletic League and was an inactive member of the AMVETS.

He was president of a school for the mentally handicapped, which eventually became Pathways. He served in the Lewiston government in many capacities, including being a member of the Parks Commission, Zoning Board and the Fire Commission, where he also served as chairman. Henry was a member of Governor Kenneth Curtis’ administration and served as state manpower coordinator.

During his lifetime, he was employed as a sales representative for the pharmaceutical firm A.H. Robins and Fisher Engineering as Midwest and Western sales representative. He helped start up the Village Inn Restaurant of Old Orchard Beach with his friends, Normand and Connie Vallee.

Henry retired from the Cumberland County Superior Court as a financial investigator.

He is survived by his daughter, Regina Paradis and husband, Gene Betterley, of Bow, N.H.; son, Christopher Paradis and wife, Zoanne, of New Gloucester; and stepdaughter-in-law, Jennifer Yeaton of Portland. He also leaves three stepchildren, Dulcie Witman of Topsham, Dirk Yeaton of Portland, and Dana Yeaton of Middlebury, Vt.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two special friends, John Flynn and Kim Libby.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Sally Witman; son, Henry Paradis III; and sister, Joan Paradis.
