BIDDEFORD — Police say alcohol may have been a factor when a driver with four previous drunken-driving convictions struck a family as they bicycled in southern Maine.

Fifty-six-year-old David Labonte of Kennebunkport initially said he had a coughing fit and fainted early Friday evening just before his pickup truck hit bicycles ridden by a man and his wife, who had their toddler son in a bicycle seat, on Route 1 in Biddeford.

Police now say Labonte had a cooler with unopened beers in his truck and that alcohol may have been a factor. No charges have been filed.

The Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/1epIjhA ) reports that Labonte has four drunken-driving convictions on his record.

A message left for Labonte with his father, where Labonte’s been staying, was not returned to the paper.
