A new list by Travel and Leisure magazine of the best islands in the world ranks Mount Desert Island at No. 25, higher than Bora Bora and Maldives and just below the Fiji Islands.
The magazine cites “scenic routes for hiking, cycling, and kayaking” and “Fjords carved by glaciers” as reasons for the ranking.
The magazine also mentions Echo Beach at Acadia National Park. Two islands in the Phillipines took the top two spots, followed by Hawaii’s Maui in third.
Maine has received a lot of attention from Travel and Leisure. The publication recently ranked Portland the sixth best city in America for ice cream. In May, North Haven was included on a list of easy island getaways. Last year, Portland was named the seventh greenest city in America.
It hasn’t all been positive, however. Last year, Portland made a list of the worst-dressed cities in the U.S. at No. 8.
