MEXICO — Residents on a stretch of River Road lost power for more than four hours Wednesday afternoon after a tree fell on power lines, police Lt. Roy Hodsdon said.

Hodsdon said he and another officer were patrolling River Road and saw the tree just past Labonville’s store.

“The tree was still bouncing on the line and was smoldering a little bit, so it must have just fallen right before we got there,” he said. “It was a pretty big tree. It damaged one of the pole lights too.”

Central Maine Power, FairPoint Communications and the Fire Department helped remove the tree from the line, Hodsdon said. While they were working, a large stretch of River Road was without power.

“The tree just got weak because of the rot and fell over,” Hodsdon said.

The Fire Department closed River Road from Veterans Bridge to Harlow Hill Road until the tree was removed.
