MEXICO — As part of their summer programs for kids, the Mexico Public Library will host a very special program at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 19, at the Calvin Lyons Hall, next door to the library. A donation box will be available to help defray the cost of the show.

The End-of-Summer-Reading Celebration will feature special guests The Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers, who will perform their show, “The Legend of the Banana Kid!”

The professional puppetry troupe is based in Bar Harbor and comprised of three siblings, Erik and Brian Torbeck and Robin Erlandson. Founded in 2000, the troupe has performed at fairs, festivals, theaters, parades, schools, libraries and petting zoos. All of their shows were written by the Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers and are performed by their hand-made puppets.

In “The Legend of the Banana Kid” Little Chucky meets a mysterious cowboy who takes him to a remote Western town that is being harassed by a seedy group of outlaws. Chucky, pretending to be a local hero, leads an effort to outsmart the thugs and bring justice back to the town using bananas as his weapon of choice.

Riding on his trusty goat, Chucky encounters all kinds of wild Western fun.

Following the show, summer reading awards, prizes and certificates will be given out to participants of the summer reading incentive program, “Read Like a Wild Thing!” A pizza and soda lunch will conclude the morning’s events for those who have participated in the reading program.
