WELD — Voters at a town meeting Monday agreed to spend up to $20,000 to buy accounting software for the town, according to Town Clerk Carol Cochran.
The 19 residents agreed the money would come from the Tree Growth penalty account, which has $37,652 in it, she said.
The TRIO Accounting Software meets generally accepted accounting systems practices and government audit standards, Cochran said before the meeting, which was held at the Town Hall and lasted 30 minutes. The software is recommended by the auditor and is the most used and respected system in Maine, she said.
It is more efficient, with less redundancy and provides double-entry bookkeeping. It also provides for more efficient audits and better response time, Cochran said. Several towns in the area use the system.
Currently, Weld uses software developed by a local person and the town is reliant on one individual for all updates and maintenance, she said.
With the TRIO software, the company stays up to date on new initiatives, regulations, requirements and mandates, and updates the software for compliance, she said.
Town officials will negotiate with the company representative. The time needed to get the system in and running was not known.
