Citizens of Auburn have now twice rejected the School Committee’s proposed budgets. Do we forget that a stable, let alone vibrant democracy requires investment in strong public schools?
I have no children, but the Auburn schools serve me by educating future employees and citizens, by supporting families, by increasing property values, by providing centers of community activity and sustainability.
As others have written, if we continue to follow the “Don’t cut you, don’t cut me, cut that fellow behind the tree” philosophy, we will end up without these shared benefits and with a community in decline.
Those with money will send their children to private schools, public schools will wither significantly and those in the middle, like me, will leave. The tax base will shrink even more.
Is that really where people want their community to go?
