A Maine business with offices in Auburn as well as Augusta and Bangor settled claims Monday with the U.S. Attorney’s Office involving improper billing to MaineCare for services rendered by a nurse who was not allowed in the federally funded program.

Employment Specialists of Maine Inc. agreed to pay $125,253.98 to settle claims made to Maine’s Medicaid program.

A civil complaint filed in federal court accused the business of violating the federal False Claims Act from early 2006 through June 2007 by billing MaineCare for services rendered by a registered nurse who had been excluded from participating in federal health care programs.

Names of all excluded people who offer medical services are made available to providers such as Employment Specialists, according to a statement from U.S. Attorney Thomas Delahanty II.

The claim sought damages that included all false claims that were paid as well as penalties.
