Two Maine Democrats who have said they would seek their party’s nomination for governor in 2014 will hold a joint news conference in Falmouth on Wednesday.
U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud, D-Maine, who made his official campaign announcement in Lewiston on Thursday, Aug. 15, will appear with Steve Woods, a Falmouth businessman and town council chairman.
Woods, who sought a U.S. Senate seat as an independent in 2012, said earlier this year he would seek the Democratic Party’s nomination in 2014.
In a proposal outlined in March, Woods said he would seek to eliminate more than 100 towns in Maine to reduce the cost of government duplication.
Woods is also the owner of TideSmart Global in Falmouth, a marketing firm, where the news conference will be hosted.
David Farmer, a spokesman for Michaud’s campaign, said he wouldn’t say what the two candidates planned to announce. “We are keeping this one as a tight hold,” Farmer said Tuesday, confirming only, “we are having an event.”
Word of Michaud’s “official” announcement leaked as soon as the campaign announced an appearance in Lewiston. Michaud had announced months earlier that he was forming an exploratory campaign.
Some political observers suggest Woods, who is relatively unknown in Maine politics, would throw his support to Michaud. But as of Tuesday Woods’ campaign website was still up and running.
A call to his campaign office was not immediately returned.
The news conference is expected to start at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
