An electric utility spokeswoman is warning customers not to fall for a phone scam from someone claiming to represent Central Maine Power Co.

CMP customers have complained of someone posing as a bill collector claiming to represent the utility calling for financial information. Some CMP customers were instructed to deposit cash or a money order into “bogus accounts” through convenience store cash transfer systems, CMP spokeswoman Gail Rice said in a news release.

Other customers were instructed to call a phone number to provide financial information.

The caller targeted mostly small businesses and restaurants in the Twin Cities area, as well as Portland and Augusta, Rice said.

She said the utility doesn’t call customers for payment if that customer’s account is in good standing. If a customer needs to make an urgent payment, the utility’s website should be used, www.cmpco.com, or find a phone number for a payment agent. If a customer has a question about a call for an overdue payment, that customer should contact CMP by calling 800-750-4000, Rice said.
