AUBURN — The Sunday, Aug. 24, worship service at 9:45 a.m. at the Court Street Baptist Church will feature the playing of the service and special music by guest musicians Glenda Winkle-Morrow and Mark Thallander.
Winkle-Morrow, who will play the Mason Hamlin grand piano, is an accomplished pianist, composer, arranger and music teacher from Missouri who has presented workshops and concerts throughout the United States and Canada.
Thallander, playing the E and GG Hook pipe organ, was organist at the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, Calif., for 18 years. Ten years ago, he lost his left arm in an accident on the Maine Turnpike while vacationing here. He has rewritten music so that he is able to perform with one hand and two feet in such a way that the listener isn’t able to notice the lack of a second hand.
Thallander, who now splits his time between Palm Springs, Calif., and Ogunquit, is president of the Mark Thallander Foundation and produces music festivals throughout the United States. He is the subject of the book, “Champions,” and was honored in 2004 with The Crystal Cathedral’s annual Life’s Not Fair But God is Good Award. Last year, he released, “Grace and Peace,” a music CD with companion book of lyrics and scripture verses.
Evening performance
At 6 p.m. Sunday evening, Winkle-Morrow and Thallander will join local musicians Kathy Haley and Dan Burgess in the annual Summer Keyboard Concert at the church, at 129 Court St. It will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the tragic automobile accident turned into triumph.
Kathleen Haley is a well-known Maine musician and singer. Early in her career, she was a member of the folk group, “The Chord Majority,” and founding member and lead singer of the “Good & Plenty” band. Haley has served as assistant conductor of the Delta Heart Choir, Thallander Foundation concert sectional rehearsal leader, director of music for several churches in Southern Maine and now is organist /choir director at the Court Street Baptist Church.
Dan Burgess is a member of the Court Street Baptist Church choir who also plays both organ and piano. He has worked at Disney World and is known to local audiences for his work in the Community Little Theater. He is a student in the University of Southern Maine music program.
A free will offering will be received. Refreshments will be served during a fellowship time following the concert.
