I am writing in response to an article about the U.S. Postal Service’s third quarter loss of $740 million (Aug. 10).
If Congress had ended the mandate to prefund future retiree health care costs (which no other company has to do), the Postal Service would have posted more than a $600 million profit.
There is no need to end Saturday or door-to-door delivery. Cutting postal services is not a way to continue along the road to recovery. As a letter carrier, I know the Postal Service is turning things around in a tough economy.
When the postmaster general was asked how he came up with the $2 billion figure of savings, he said it was just an estimate. There was never a study done to justify that figure.
Members of Congress should take steps to end the prefunding mandate for future retirees.
