HARRISON — The town’s eight-week Fun, Friends & Fitness summer day camp and six-week American Red Cross swim program ended Thursday with activities that included the annual swim across Crystal Lake and barbecue.

Participants gathered at Vacationland Campground on the western shores of the lake and swam a mile-and-a-half to the Crystal Lake town beach, taking as little as 39 minutes to complete the swim, Recreation Director Paula Holt said.

Holt said the summer recreation program also concluded with the British Challenger Soccer Camp at the RADR Sports Complex, the annual Olympic Field Day and the senior adult trip to Boothbay Harbor and Cabbage Island.

She said the swim was not a race but an individual competition. Jackie Patek made the swim in a record 39 minutes; Leigh Ann Defresne, 50 minutes; Amy Milo, 45 minutes; Jamie Mazer, 40 minutes; Katie Murrin, 1 hour, 7 minutes; Mae Milo, 54 minutes; and Hannah Murrin, 54 minutes.

Also swimming the course were Carson Brynie, 1 hour, 8 minutes; Catrina Wilson, 1 hour, 6 minutes; Linda Herskovitz, 1 hour, 8 minutes; Theresa Wilson, 1 hour, 5 minutes; Dimitri DiBiase, 52 minutes and Noah Currier, 1 hour, 4 minutes.

Once completed, the swimmers received their “I Swam Across the Lake 2013” T-shirts. Paddlers who ensured their safety included Garrett Hudanish, Joey Gallant, Bobbie Scribner, Michelle Basselet, Jess DiBiase, Trish Murrin, Joy Norkin, Sophie Milo and James and Julia Plante

Holt said the department’s waterfront instructors Hadley Hurd and Emma Devito taught swim skills to more than 100 children during the ARC swim program, assisted by Angel Pagleirani and Spencer Hurd.
