AUBURN — The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society is accepting registrations for people and their canine friends to Strutt your Mutt or run in the Dash for Dogs 5K during their 17th annual Pet Festival on Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Auburn Petco from 8 a.m. to noon.

The festival will begin with the 5K run at 8:30 a.m. followed by a Blessing of the Animals at 9:30 before beginning the Strutt your Mutt Dog Walk portion of the event. The day will also feature pet friendly vendors, raffles, area rescue organizations, a pool party, canine talent contests, agility and demonstrations by the Maine Search and Rescue Dogs organization. Plus, adoptable shelter dogs, including puppies, will also attend the festival in hopes of finding their forever-home.

Cost to register for the 5K is $25 in advance and $15 for the Dog Walk in advance ($25 onsite the day of the event). Walkers are also asked to collect pledges. Preregistration for both events must be received no later than Sept. 12.

The money raised from this day stays right here in our community and directly benefits the homeless, abandoned and abused animals at Humane Society for their food, shelter, veterinary care and a chance at a new home.

This is a “people” walk; dogs are welcome, but not necessary. Walking as a team through one’s business or with friends is also encouraged. Dogs must be leashed and have their current rabies vaccination. No dogs in heat please. Pledge sheets are available at the shelter or online at www.SavingPetsInMaine.org.

GAHS, at 55 Strawberry Ave., Lewiston, provides a safe haven for more than 5,500 sick, homeless and abused animals in the greater Androscoggin area per a year. The primary support for the shelter comes from fundraising events, such as the Pet Festival and donations of concerned citizens.
