U.S. Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, was returning to Washington on Tuesday to attend a pair of classified briefings on the situation in Syria and the potential of a U.S. military strike against there.

King was expected to attend a joint House-Senate classified briefing on Syria and a closed-door meeting of the Senate Intelligence Committee on the evidence regarding the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

King is a member of the Intelligence Committee. Almost all of the committee’s meetings deal with secret information and are seldom held in public sessions.

King was also expected to participate in  a Senate Armed Services Committee classified briefing on Syria on Wednesday as well, according to statement issued from his office Tuesday.

“As Congress prepares to debate the important question of authorizing military force against the Assad regime in Syria, it is critical that I thoroughly study the evidence and hear the arguments presented by the administration, my colleagues, and the people of Maine who have reached out to me,” King said in a prepared statement Tuesday. “I have not yet arrived at a decision on how I will vote, but as I have previously said, I will continue to examine the facts and hear the arguments before arriving at a conclusion that I believe will best serve the interests of the United States.”
