RUMFORD — The Roxbury ATV Riders will present a check to the Maine Children’s Cancer Program at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at Hosmer Field.
According to Gloria Pateneaude, a member of the Roxbury ATV Riders, members will meet behind the Mexico Fire Department and be escorted to Hosmer Field shortly before the Maine Children’s Cancer Program’s annual walk begins.
“We’re going to present the check to Sandra Welch prior to the walk,” Pateneaude said. “For us, it’s a really good cause to be helping out.”
During a night ride on June 22, the Roxbury ATV Riders raised $650 for the Maine Children’s Cancer Program. According to Pateneaude, the final number being donated will “be a little over $1,000.
“When we first held the night ride, we weren’t sure where the money would go to,” Pateneaude said. “We heard a little bit more about this program and decided that it was a good cause and would be a good fit. In terms of donating the money, it was a bit of a spur of the moment thing.”
Pateneaude said she believes helping out the MCCP will help “people understand what they’re all about.”
In addition to the money being donated, the Roxbury ATV Riders will also be raffling off a hand-carved wooden four-wheeler, crafted by Roxbury resident Phil McCrillis, known as “Uncle Lumpy” to those familiar with his work.
“Phil is one of our customers down at Roland’s Automotives, and a good friend,” Pateneaude said. “He offered to craft the wooden four-wheeler for us, and we sold raffle tickets to people interested in it. We’ll be raffling off the four-wheeler at Hosmer Field before the walk begins.”
The Maine Elks Association has been raising money for the Maine Children’s Cancer Program since 1985, when they adopted the program as one of their major projects. Welch said that as of 2013, the group has surpassed $3 million in donations.
