Firefighters spent Friday night battling a fire in bales of hay in a field off Loring Avenue, working with a crew from the Public Works Department and the Water District to control the flames. The fire, which consumed 37 rolls of hay, each weighing about 800 pounds, “was definitely set by three kids who were seen running from the scene,’ said Fire Department Capt. Charles Berube. Efforts to control the fire, reported shortly after 6:30 p.m., were hampered by the fact that the closest water supply was about three-quarters of a mile from the scene. Tank trucks were used in relays to keep firefighters supplied with water. Fire Chief Clifton Smith said, “It is a nuisance-type fire. It’s not going anywhere, but it is an expensive nuisance.”
