FARMINGTON — Work on the riverbank stabilization project off the Whittier Road continues with good weather and lower water, according to Public Works Director Denis Castonguay.
He provided photos taken Tuesday morning along the eroded bank of the Sandy River.
Heavy rains from Tropical Storm Irene in August 2011 washed away part of the riverbank, threatening a portion of the Whittier Road.
The final plan for the work included using a system of rocks, tree root-wads and wood pilings to hold back the bank and to capture sediment washed into the system from the river.
Local contractor E.L. Vining and Son is moving quickly to finish the work before the end of the river’s low water period later this month.
Last week’s rains caused no ill effects to the project or the banking, Town Manager Richard Davis said.
