J.P. Hutchinson, of Auburn, has long had a dream of a passage from tide water on the coast to these cities. His idea is to get a government appropriation to deepen the Androscoggin River at certain points and with locks to get around the falls at Topsham and Brunswick. In speaking of this to the Journal, Mr. Hutchinson says: “I do not consider that there is anything impracticable or impossible in the schemes. There is never a session of the Congress when something of this nature is not provided for. Do you realize what a saving it would be if business men of these two cities could have all their goods and freight come by water? If this could be done, saving in freight bills would pay interest on double the cost of making the Androscoggin a navigable river. As a matter of fact, I believe our business men could pool together and do the work themselves at a great profit and it is not necessary to even agitate this.”

The injured pigeon at E.J. Pelletier’s home, 143 Pierce St., Lewiston, may have come a long way. An identification band on the bird’s leg is assigned to Hubert V. Ross, 4300 Harrison Drive, Spenard, Alaska. According to the 1962 Band List of the American Racing Pigeon Union. Pelletier has been caring for the pigeon the past few days and now would like the owner to pick up his bird. He asked the bird to leave, without luck. Maybe it dreads thinking about that long flight back to Alaska.
