WINDSOR — Police have released the identity of a man killed in a fiery accident in Kennebec County on Wednesday.

Devan Basinet, 23, of Jefferson was heading from the Augusta area toward Lincoln County when the crash occurred in Windsor at the intersection of routes 32 and 17, Chief Deputy Ryan Reardon of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office said.

Reardon said sheriff’s deputies were able to confirm Basinet’s identity using medical records. His body was burned beyond recognition at the scene.

Basinet’s vehicle, believed to be a Chevy Blazer, struck several telephone poles before flipping over and bursting into flames. He was still inside the burning vehicle when rescue workers arrived on scene.

Basinet was traveling along Route 17 at the time of the crash.

It’s still unclear whether speed or alcohol played a role in the accident. Reardon said Wednesday unopened alcohol containers were found in the vehicle.

“It’ll be a couple more days for that,” Reardon said Thursday morning. “We’re waiting for the reconstruction.”
