SCARBOROUGH — The Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter has announced start-up of its Social Programs initiative in the Lewiston/Auburn area.
The program’s first event will be a guided tour of Museum L-A, at 35 Canal St., Lewiston, in the afternoon of Friday, Oct. 4.
Cost for the tour and museum visit is $4 per person. People living with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias, as well as their care partners, are eligible for this event.
“We’re thrilled to be bringing our interesting, fun and confidential Social Programs to the Lewiston/Auburn area for those living with Alzheimer’s disease and their care partners,” said Social Programs coordinator Mark Pechenik.
“Our Portland-area Social Programs events have met with very positive results,” said Pechenik, who also serves as the association’s director of Community Engagement and Outreach. “And we’re optimistic they will be equally beneficial for participants in Lewiston and Auburn.”
Among the most important of these benefits is “social activity and interaction,” according to Laurie Trenholm, the Maine Chapter’s executive director.
She points to an increasing body of research indicating that, by being active both physically and mentally, those living with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias can enhance their quality of life.
“We invite those curious about our Social Programs to give it a try,” said Trenholm. “We have many people who have come to truly enjoy these activities.”
