PORTLAND (AP) — The U.S. Department of Education says it has reached an agreement with the Portland, Maine, public schools that will give girls equal opportunities as boys to participate in athletics.
The department’s Office for Civil Rights said Thursday that a review found that girls were underepresented in the district’s athletic programs under Title IX.
The district has agreed to add girls’ volleyball to its interscholastic program in the 2014-15 school year and ensure that locker rooms, practice and competitive facilities for girls’ teams are equivalent to those of boys’ teams.
The district also has agreed to continue to assess additional athletic opportunities for girls so that its program will either fully accommodates the interest of girls or the number of girls participating in athletics will be in proportion to their enrollment.
