State Beekeepers Annual Meeting

PORTLAND — The Maine State Beekeepers Annual Meeting will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at Italian Heritage Center, 40 Westland Ave. Registration deadline is Oct. 15.

Three speakers will focus on honeybee sustainability in the Northeast.

Dr. Deborah Delaney from the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware studies unmanaged honeybee populations. Her talks will give an overview of the work being done in that field and how it can guide our practice.

Kirk Webster has owned and operated Champlain Valley Bees & Queens in Middlebury, Vt., since 1986. The apiary has been completely treatment-free since 2002 and is well known for producing strong Russian queens and nucs as well as honey. Making nucs in midsummer for over-wintering are key in his management system and are the best way we have to help the survivability our hives.

Tony Jadczak, Maine State Apiarist since 1983, will present an overview of hive health in Maine during 2013.

Paris Cape Historical Society

PARIS — The Paris Cape Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, at its museum, 77 High St.

A special program will be given by John Davis, U.S. Navy, retired, on the Doolittle raid of 1942 and commemorate the final reunion of the survivors of the mission.

The public is welcome to attend and join in honoring all military personnel, both in active duty or retired. Refreshments will be served following the meeting.

The society recently completed mapping out Norway Pine Grove Cemetery. Disks will be available for sale to anyone who has family buried there or who has an interest in those burials. In the coming year the group plans to have disks available for Riverside Cemetery and Riverside Annex.

Program on clean elections

AUGUSTA — B.J. McCollister of Maine Citizens for Clean Elections will give an informational talk at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at Lithgow Public Library, 45 Winthrop St. The program, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Reading Room. There will be an opportunity for questions.

MCCE is a nonpartisan organization that works in the public interest to advocate for, increase public support for, defend and improve the Maine Clean Election Act and related campaign finance law.

St. Catherine’s rummage sale

NORWAY — A rummage sale will take place from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at St. Catherine’s Church Hall, 32 Paris St.

There is a good selection of winter clothing and white elephant items available.

The sale is hosted by the Youth Ministry and will be used for retreats and programs for young people.

Finnish, American buffet supper

WEST PARIS — A public buffet supper featuring Finnish, American and other ethnic foods will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Finnish-American Heritage Center, 8 Maple St.

Cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children under 12.

The meal is sponsored by the Finnish-American Heritage Society of Maine.

Library to hold Buck-a-Bag Sale

WEST PARIS — The West Paris Library held its annual Used Book Sale on Oct. 12.

The remaining books will be sold in a Buck-a-Bag Sale from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, also at the Historical Society building across from the library.

There will be a chance to win some wonderful raffle prizes.

WEST PARIS — The Finnish-American Heritage Society of Maine will meet at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, at 8 Maple St.

Following a brief business meeting, a coffee social will be held during which time Dale Piirainen will speak on the famines of Finland in the 1800s.

The building is handicap accessible. The public is welcome to attend.

Woodstock starts anniversary plans

WOODSTOCK — The Town of Woodstock was established by Charter from Massachusetts on Feb. 8, 1815. This means that in 2015 the town will celebrate its 200th anniversary. The selectmen are looking for citizens interested in helping them plan the activities, events and festivities for the celebration.
