State Beekeepers Annual Meeting
PORTLAND — The Maine State Beekeepers Annual Meeting will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at Italian Heritage Center, 40 Westland Ave. Registration deadline is Oct. 15.
Three speakers will focus on honeybee sustainability in the Northeast.
Dr. Deborah Delaney from the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware studies unmanaged honeybee populations. Her talks will give an overview of the work being done in that field and how it can guide our practice.
Kirk Webster has owned and operated Champlain Valley Bees & Queens in Middlebury, Vt., since 1986. The apiary has been completely treatment-free since 2002 and is well known for producing strong Russian queens and nucs as well as honey. Making nucs in midsummer for over-wintering are key in his management system and are the best way we have to help the survivability our hives.
Tony Jadczak, Maine State Apiarist since 1983, will present an overview of hive health in Maine during 2013.

Program on clean elections
AUGUSTA — B.J. McCollister of Maine Citizens for Clean Elections will give an informational talk at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at Lithgow Public Library, 45 Winthrop St. The program, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Reading Room. There will be an opportunity for questions.
MCCE is a nonpartisan organization that works in the public interest to advocate for, increase public support for, defend and improve the Maine Clean Election Act and related campaign finance law.

Webb River supper, meeting
DIXFIELD — The Webb River Sportsman’s Club will have their supper and meeting on Monday, Oct. 21, at the club house on the Canton Point Road.
Supper at 6:30 p.m. will be followed by a meeting at 7. Members and guests are welcome.
Rumford Seniors have new location
PERU — There will be a luncheon on Monday, Oct. 21, at the new location of the Rumford Senior Citizens, the old Peru School.
The menu is beef stew, biscuits, drink and dessert. Cost is $4.50.
The group is still in the process of getting settled. The phone will be operational soon and the new number is 562-7700.
The members hope to continue nickel bingo on Tuesdays from 12:30 to 2 p.m.
Sons of Italy meet Oct. 21
RUMFORD — The Sons of Italy will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21, at the Sons of Italy Hall.
Attendees are asked to bring ideas for new memberships, fund raisers, etc.
Stephens High Class of 1945
RUMFORD — Stephens High School Class of 1945 will meet at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, at Brian’s Bistro.
WOWS to meet at new location
PERU — Widows Or Widowers will meet at noon Friday, Oct. 25, for a potluck lunch at their new location, Old Peru School.
Speaker will be Donna Bucher on senior nutrition.
All area widows or widowers are welcome. Dues are $10 for the year.
