MEXICO — Police responded Sunday to an accident on Route 2 involving a Mexico woman who backed her vehicle into oncoming traffic before crashing into a utility pole.
According to Patrolman Travis R. Luce, Dorothy Fontaine, 91, of Mexico was sitting in the passenger seat of a 1994 Chevrolet car parked in front of the Subway on Main Street while her daughter was inside of the Maine Smoke Shop.
Fontaine subsequently pulled the vehicle out of park and into reverse, causing the vehicle to roll backwards across Main Street, where it struck the curb, rolled down a slope and struck a utility pole, then came to a rest.
Interim police Chief Roy Hodsdon said that Fontaine did not receive any injuries and turned down medical attention.
The Chevrolet received “between $1,500 and $2,000 in damage,” according to Hodsdon, and was towed away by Andy Dupuis’ Towing and Salvage.
Hodsdon added that a minimal amount of damage was done to the utility pole and the guy wire attached to it.
